About me

My full name is actually Gary James McIlkenny but for my artwork I just use “James” (it’s easier!)

I have painted on and off since my early twenties but only recently chose to make it my main activity.  I started my working life as a graduate engineer then went on to work in research, building and retail  before coming back to my first love – art.

I don’t feel constrained to stick to any particular style or subject matter.  Having said that, I naturally tend towards a more ‘realistic’ way of painting.  I mostly paint in oils and draw with charcoal or oil based coloured pencils.  I am a member of the Scottish Society of Artists and work from a studio in the east end of Glasgow.
